Vascular Grafts: Technology Success/Technology Failure

نویسندگان

چکیده

Vascular prostheses (grafts) are widely used for hemodialysis blood access, trauma repair, aneurism and cardiovascular reconstruction. However, smaller-diameter (≤4 mm) grafts that would be valuable many reconstructions have not been achieved to date, although hundreds of papers on small-diameter vascular published. This perspective article presents a hypothesis may open new research avenues the development grafts. A historical review graft literature specific types is presented focusing observations important presented. Considerations in critically reviewing discussed. The perhaps “biocompatible biomaterials” comprising our grafts—biomaterials generate dense, nonvascularized collagenous capsules upon implantation—may all biocompatible Examples materials heal with tissue reconstruction vascularity, contrast fibrotic encapsulation, offered. Such prohealing lead way generation suitable reconstructions.

Tissue engineering of vascular grafts

Tissue engineering of vascular grafts 187 1 3 Summary Background There is a considerable clinical need for a sufficient prosthetic small-diameter substitute which can compete with autologous vessels. Currently used synthetic materials have a poor performance due to high thrombogeneicity and development of intimal hyperplasia. Tissue engineering is an interesting alternative approach for vascula...

Intrinsic structural failure of polyester (Dacron) vascular grafts. A general review.

Intrinsic structural failure of Dacron prostheses is a late exceptional complication, resulting from a loss of structural integrity of the graft. The authors report six cases of non-anastomotic false aneurysms in the mid-portion of a vascular Dacron graft, observed at a mean of 12 years after insertion. It concerns four femoro-popliteal bypass grafts, one cross-over graft and a branch of a bifu...

Endothelial linings in prosthetic vascular grafts.

Of all the animals so far studied, man is the only one known to be incapable of healing prosthetic vascular grafts with its own natural endothelium. Consequently there has been considerable effort in the 30 or so years since the first prosthetic grafts became available either to find truly nonthrombogenic artificial materials or to enhance the body’s own natural healing processes in order to pr...

Tissue engineering of small diameter vascular grafts.

Tissue engineering, using either polymer or biological based scaffolds, represents the newest approach to overcoming limitations of small diameter prosthetic vascular grafts. Their disadvantages include thromboembolism and thrombosis, anticoagulant related haemorrhage, compliance mismatch, neointimal hyperplasia, as well as aneurysm formation. This current review represents an overview about pr...

Endothelial cell seeding of polymeric vascular grafts.

Pioneers in the field of small diameter graft development sought to promote graft endothelialization and, thereby, increase patency by transplanting a varying degree of autologous endothelial cells onto vascular grafts prior to implantation. This process has become known as endothelial cell seeding. The underlying hypothesis is quite simple; that is, by promoting the establishment of the patien...
